Self-Care

Let’s face it, we’re all great at working ourselves into the ground! So I wanted to share some of my daily self-care routines to keep my life balance in check. In the past, it has always been the last thing I’ve focused on. The older I get, the more I realise that for me to excel in anything I do, I need to be at my best. Think about the old aeroplane rule – ‘please secure your own mask before helping anyone else’

What do I do?

Always some form of exercise, preferably in nature. At the moment I’m really enjoying Yoga and talking long walks, and in the past callisthenics, weights, running, crosstraining, rowing, even a Zumba class! (Although I twisted my knee in that class so took that as a sign it wasn’t for me!)

I also do things like a skincare routine, which has become more about the ritual of taking the time, lighting a candle and enjoying the peace for 5 minutes or so whilst I happen to be putting on some moisturiser and various other products (usually that my sister has suggested – I’m useless at things like that)!

Cooking for me has always been a great way to relax – mainly because it leads to eating yummy food, and feeding people who mean the most to me is very rewarding.

To slow my brain and energy, I also meditate and practice mindfulness. Just stopping for a bit of time every day is great to recenter yourself. Personally, I will use mantras, or an app such as Calm that has daily meditations to take some time for myself.

Finally, something like a nice soak in the bath to round off my day whilst watching either a film or a fun guilty pleasure like Ru Paul’s Drag Race (great for stage outfits/makeup ideas!) or Married At First Sight Australia.
